How Much Sea Ice Are We Losing?

I always see sea ice plotted in ways that make it hard for me to figure out exactly how it's varying so I took a stab at making heat maps of it.

Data

I took the data from here.

Here is the change in global sea ice extent relative to the 1981 - 2010 average:

loss in sea ice over time

Here is the change in global sea ice area relative to the 1981 - 2010 average:

loss in sea ice extent over time

If you prefer %, here's the % change in global sea ice extent relative to the 1981 - 2010 average:

For reference, area is "total measured sea ice covered area in grid cells with average sea ice  concentration greater or equal to 15%" and extent is "total area of grid cells with average sea ice  concentration greater or equal to 15%."

To me, this is much easier to read than the typical way I see it presented which is something like this:

No real point to this other than the visualization. Ice levels are falling over time but that's already really well-known.
