How Can We Stop Global Warming?

This is a simple tool for seeing how different policies might impact global warming going forward.

Carbon Tax Calculator

I was curious how a carbon tax would affect prices and could not find a nice calculator, so I made one.

How Far Should You Live From A Road To Avoid Pollution?

A seemingly rarely talked about problem is pollution from cars and trucks affecting commuters and people who live and work near major roadways. There are many publications on this, but I could not find one that aggregated information cleanly so I put this together.

Global Warming Is Accelerating

Is the rate of global warming increasing over time? Unfortunately, it appears to be...

Why Don't I Notice Global Warming?

We still have winter and summer. Why do I keep hearing that the Earth is warming if it's still getting cold and I can't tell that it's warming?

Can Carbon Engineering's Plants Remove Enough CO2 To Solve Global Warming?

I know they aren't claiming they can, but I've seen this hyped a lot and wanted to run the numbers to get an idea of how feasible it is.

What Are Some Impacts Of Each Degree Of Global Warming?

There are two cool sources I've encountered that summarize this...

How Bad Of A Greenhouse Gas Is Methane?

You'll often hear that methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but how bad is it really?
methane global warming potential

Is Your City Getting Hotter?

I had an idea for how to very simply visualize temperature changes for a given location...

When Will Arctic Sea Ice Melt?

Arctic sea ice extent is steadily dropping. When are we likely to see our first 'blue ocean event' when the Arctic Ocean is effectively ice free?

Tool For Playing With Atlantic Hurricane Data

I made a tool for playing with Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane data.

Visualizing A Heat Wave - 2003 Europe

I put together another heat wave visualization. I chose the 2003 heat wave in Europe. I previously did this for the 2011 heat wave in the central US.

Is Atmospheric CO2 Increasing Exponentially?

I saw someone ask this on reddit and was surprised that no clear breakdowns showed up when I googled so I figured I'd work it out...

Visualize How Much Carbon And CO2 Humans Emit

It's hard to picture exactly how much carbon we emit. One decent way to do it is to relate it to the carbon in forests.

Tool For Comparing City Climate Profiles

I've added another tool.

This one lets you compare city climate profiles using the same interface that the city doppleganger tool used. That is, it compares:
  • average monthly high temps
  • average monthly low temps
  • average monthly rainfall
  • average monthly humidity
  • average monthly sunlight
There are roughly 1,000 cities available, so try it out. It's quite fun.

Increased CO2 Levels Negatively Affect Our Brains

Something that isn't often discussed is the non-greenhouse impacts of increasing atmospheric CO2. One of those is that increased CO2 levels affect human cognition, so I've summarized some of the research here.

Pro-Coal And Pro-Life Are Incompatible Positions

An interesting situation exists in the US. The pro-life and pro-coal factions are both part of the GOP. I understand that we only have two parties at the national level in the US so you have to pick the one that you most align with, but the GOP should drop its pro-coal stance if it wants to keep its pro-life stance.

Atmospheric CO2 Levels Are Accelerating

I see atmospheric CO2 levels plotted vs year pretty regularly, but I realized that I don't recall seeing how much it actually changes each year so here's that...

US Energy Usage By Type

You hear a lot about the death of coal and the rise of renewables, but I haven't seen the data in a format that I've really liked so I put that together.

Can We Stop Global Warming?

There are a massive number of articles out there about global warming and the Paris agreement. The goal was to stay under 1.5 degrees of warming and our absolute limit was 2.0 degrees of warming. I rarely, if ever, see articles that talk about the feasibility of any of this though, and I figured I'd write my blunt assessment.

Tool For Visualizing Our Carbon Budget

I've added a new tool that lets you visualize our carbon budget in a way that I haven't seen before (I've seen this type of visualization...not a tool that lets you play with it).

Tool For Finding Your Ideal City Climate

I've added a new tool that lets you filter cities by climate characteristics so you can find the city with your ideal climate...
